Shades of White, Saldanha Bay

Wide open spaces

Wide open spaces. Clockwise from top left: view of the house from the beach in front; running free; vintage seesaw in the front yard; beautifully decorated second bedroom; enjoying outdoor time.

A few weeks ago we packed the car to the brim and headed up the West Coast to a beautiful gem of a self-catering home at Bluewater Bay in Saldanha. The house can be booked through Perfect Hideaways and has five rooms (that can sleep up to ten). The main house has two double rooms en-suite and another room with twin beds. A separate annexe (locked if you don’t need all the space) has an additional two bedrooms. The house is spacious with an open-plan lounge and a large kitchen, perfect for preparing languid lunches. The views are amazing, no matter where you are in the main house – it’s just sand, ocean and the horizon beyond. The decor and furnishings are luxurious yet fuss-free – laid-back beach chic, if you will.  There’s a large flatscreen TV with DSTV, a fireplace indoors and a braai outside in the front courtyard. The kitchen has everything you need, from mixers and a coffee machine, to two fridges, a gas stove and every culinary gadget imaginable. It’s really like a home away from home; all you need to pack is food and drinks and you won’t need to leave at all (and trust me, you won’t want to).

Seaside chic

Seaside chic. Clockwise from top left: perfect little nook to enjoy fresh seafood; the best spot to admire the view; the large house has five bedrooms; pop down to the harbour and get a seafood platter to go; enjoy a lengthy stroll on the beach.

The back garden is basically the beach; meander through a little fynbos garden and follow the path directly to the sand. The beach is mostly empty, making it feel as if you have the whole area to yourself. There are a small cluster of houses closeby and if you stroll a few steps out of the front door you’ll find a boules court (the home has its own set) and a few steps further you’ll find a little park for children, with swings, a seesaw and a castle-type structure.

If the serenity is too much, take a drive to the harbour and order a seafood platter to go (because the house has a wonderful deck that looks over the ocean and it’s the perfect spot to enjoy fresh seafood and a chilled glass of bubbly while watching the sunset).

Seaside fun

Seaside fun. Clockwise from top left: toys from nature; the lounge; enjoying the front courtyard; the lovely open-plan kitchen; the beach all to herself.

Perfect for families or a weekend away with a group of friends.
